TVSummary guide: Nashville Star: Summary 7/28/08
MsScarlett writes, " There is some YouTube gossip going around about a member of the Cyrus family right now. This member is being accused of pretty much being a mean girl and making fun of her friend on the internet. Now, I am a big fan of Mi—er, this family member and I really hope that the negative publicity of late will start to die down. Go watch the lion video instead. (“Christian the Lion.” Really. It’s heartwarming!) Or, better yet, stay a while and watch Nashville Star and Papa Cyrus with us. The remaining finalists are going back to their hometowns tonight for a visit. Tonight will also be your last chance to vote as a finalist will announced next week.
May City, Iowa’s own Shawn Mayer is our first performer tonight. She is singing “I’m Here for the Party.” Something about Shawn has always kind of reminded of Gretchen Wilson, so it’s interesting to see her do one of Gretchen’s songs.
John: You made that sound like a Shawn Mayer song. Jewel: You’re coming into your own. Jeffrey: Give it your best shot. Gabe Garcia from Lytle, Texas, is up next. He is singing “Five O’Clock Somewhere.” Not his best ever performance, but Gabe’s voice is smooth as always. Jeffrey: A little shaky. Make your next performance your best one. John: You can bridge to the Hispanic community in country music. Jewel: The work is just beginning. Coffey gets to go back and visit his home town of Los Angeles. Tonight, Coffey is singing “Sweet Home Alabama.” Not only is he singing Lynyrd Skynyrd, but he also declares, “Rest in peace, Ronnie Van Zant.” Now, to a native of Jacksonville, FL, where Skynyrd was born (like myself), if you are going to invoke the name of Ronnie Van Zant, you better be ready to turn it out. Coffey was pretty good, but was he worthy? Jeffrey: This was pretty good. John: You have incredible charisma. I still doubt that you are a Nashville Star. Jewel: I thought it was great tonight. Arlington, Texas is the hometown of Melissa Lawson. She decides to channel her inner Pat Benetar tonight and sing “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” Is it her best shot? Maybe not, but Melissa is still a fairly consistently strong performer. Jewel: I thought that was a good job. Jeffrey: I feel like everyone is sneaking up on you now. John: You sounded great. Now, three of our hopefuls will advance to the next round and get to sing a second song. One of them will be eliminated. The first performer moving on is Shawn Mayer. Her final performance is “The Dance.” This is possibly one of the best country songs ever, and this is a nice side of Shawn to see. Well done. John: You are light years ahead of where you were. Jewel: I think you would be a good Nashville Star. Jeffrey: You showed yourself to be a real pro tonight. The next person moving on tonight is Melissa Lawsen. She sings “Jesus Take the Wheel.” When she started, I questioned the wisdom of singing a Carrie Underwood (American Idol!) song on Nashville Star, especially one that is so closely connected to Carrie. But, Melissa gave a stunning performance of the song. Jewel: I liked your husband and your family. Jeffrey: I loved it. John: You have shot at being Nashville Star. It is now down to Gabe and Coffey. One will stay, one will go. And, the last finalist for tonight is…Gabe Garcia. His last performance of the night is “Living in Fast Forward.” I’m not sure it was the best of performances, but I will give him credit for trying to make a connection with the audience. Jeffrey: We got some great talent here tonight. That voice is radio all day long. John: You could be so important to country music. Jewel: I think you are doing a great job. That means that Coffey went home tonight. Congrats to Coffey for making it this far. MsScarlett’s prediction: I think Gabe has the most traditional country voice, and Melissa has the strongest voice, but I would kind of like to see Shawn win this one. She has improved the most over the course of the show, and I think she has some natural star quality. Ref’s prediction: He likes Gabe the best, but sees Melissa as the winner. Odd musing for the night—why hasn’t Billy Ray had a chance to perform? Jewel sang when she was the host. Wynona sang when she was the host. Bring on some Billy Ray! On that note, good night and tune in next week to see who will be the next NASHVILLE STAR!! MsScarlett and Ref, RealityTVRules.com
