TVNews: Survivor Amazon: Office Politics – Christy
Survivor has seen its fair share of castaways that determine you take a closer look at them as people and not just reality show contestants. Their personality or various qualities about them make the viewer more curious about them and their success on the show. The third castaway in the Amazon may just be the most interesting of them all. Christy Smith is a young, attractive 24-year-old adventure guide from Colorado who brings something unusual to the table.
Christy is hearing impaired and primarily uses the skill of lip reading in order to hear. Most offices do not have a hearing impaired person so it will be a bit more difficult to understand how she would fit into to the big scheme of things. Those offices that do have a hearing impaired person may have a number of people who have strong feelings about the particular intricacies of dealing with this person.
Let the politics begin by taking a look at Christy’s occupation. She is a children’s adventure guide for the deaf. This should lead her fellow tribe mates of Jaburu to believe that she would know what she is doing when placed in a survival situation such as this. If she can relate this to them without being uppity about it, they will obviously look to her as a source of information. Christy has a degree in sociology/criminology, which leads me to believe that she has the ability to read people and make careful and calculated decisions about where they might stand. Her CBS bio also has Christy describing herself as ‘…independent and goal oriented’. These traits might come in handy later on in the game but could be a source of difficulty as the tribe sets itself up to work together. Christy appears to be on the surface a very nice woman with a friendly helpful nature but also one who will be keen to know what she is doing. Her luxury item of sage should be one of the more interesting ones out there and may become a part of the game play. There is one final element to discuss when seeing how Christy will fare in the Amazon and that is her ability to communicate to her other castaways.
The ability to lip-read could make or break Christy as it means that her fellow castaways will have to be concerned if Christy decides to use this ability for personal gain. It may not be what a majority of people would like to see but it is a distinct possibility that she could lip-read in order to gain an idea of how alliances are shaking out. I do not feel that this will be the case with Christy, as she will work to prove that she belongs out there with the rest of them. This would mean that she would fit into a skilled worker role. There may be a built-in sympathy to Christy’s case and that may work to her advantage but her bio reads like someone who has overcome obstacles before and will strive to fit in. The older ladies of Jaburu could very well find a valuable ally in her while the younger ladies could make friends. Christy should never have to attempt to move up the leadership ladder as once she has gained her allies; they may be hard pressed to vote her out. After all, who wants to be remembered for voting out a hearing impaired woman? Christy brings a lot to the table and there must have been something special that casting saw to put her on the show. The longer that Christy lasts on the show, the more it shows that she belonged. She will play an important role in Survivor history because the one trait that all five of the previous winners have is that they knew how to adapt and adaptation will be of prime importance to Christy from day one. Her unique qualities and background will keep me following her right up until her last appearance on the show. Written By: Wildcard, TVRules.net
